Examining the Impact of African American History on Policy and Politics

The history of African Americans is a long and complex one. It includes the history of African peoples before the political conflicts that led to the development of slavery, and the history and contributions of Americans of the African diaspora to society. From the fight for civil rights, to the contributions of Black leaders to the sciences, arts, and politics, the African American experience has been a major force in shaping the United States and the world.

The recent debate over gas stoves and their possible regulation has sparked a political debate that has gone beyond the issue of indoor air pollution.[0] It has become a point of contention between those who want the appliance to remain unregulated, and those who believe that the environmental and health risks associated with gas stoves should be taken seriously.

Governor Ron DeSantis released the proposed Fiscal 2023-2024 Framework for Freedom Budget, which includes high-priority conservation items like eradication and control of nonnative fish and wildlife species, and enhanced protections for manatees and sea turtles.[1] DeSantis also proposed cutting taxes by $2 billion to provide relief to Florida families, and has expressed his commitment to ensuring Florida’s natural resources will be abundant for future generations to enjoy.[1]

DeSantis has also sought to change the law so that death penalties in his state no longer require a unanimous jury.[2] He has also sought to ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs, including critical race theory, at Florida colleges.[3] This has been met with criticism from many quarters, who feel that these programs are necessary for educating young people about the history of African Americans and the black experience.

Finally, Disney has weighed in on the Reedy Creek Improvement District issue, stating that they remain committed to providing the highest quality experience for their guests, regardless of the outcome of the legislation.[4]

Overall, we are seeing how the history of African Americans and the current political discourse can shape the actions of government in many ways. It is essential that we continue to protect the rights and contributions of African Americans, and ensure that their history is not forgotten.
