The history of African Americans is a complex one, spanning centuries and including the history of African peoples before the political conflicts that led to the development of slavery, as well as the history and contributions of Americans of the African diaspora to society.[0] The debate over the rights of African Americans has been ongoing since before the United States was established, with issues such as civil rights and racial equality still being fiercely contested to this day.
The most recent development in this ongoing debate is the announcement by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis of his plan to ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs at Florida colleges.[1] This includes critical race theory, which is a framework for understanding and addressing racism in the United States.[2] DeSantis’ announcement has sparked a range of reactions from both sides of the debate, with many arguing that such bans will undermine the progress that has been made in tackling issues of racism and inequality.
Another issue related to African American history is the ongoing debate over the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a government-created special district that is home to Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida. This district was established in 1967, granting Disney a great deal of autonomy when it comes to land use, taxation and environmental regulation. The district has been the subject of much discussion in recent years, with the most recent development being Disney’s statement on the matter. In their statement, they affirmed their commitment to providing a high-quality experience for the millions of guests who visit Disney World each year, regardless of the outcome of the draft legislation.[3]
