Governor DeSantis’s Proposed Framework for Freedom Budget and Ban on DEI Programs

On February 1st, Governor Ron DeSantis released the proposed Fiscal 2023-2024 Framework for Freedom Budget, which includes high-priority conservation items, such as eradication and control of pythons, enhanced protections for manatees and sea turtles, and support for law enforcement.[0] This budget is evidence of DeSantis’ commitment to ensure Florida’s natural resources are preserved for future generations.[0] The proposed Framework for Freedom Budget totals $114.8 billion, $3.9 billion more than the current year’s budget. It recommends realignment of priorities across state agencies and cutting taxes by $2 billion to provide relief to Florida families.[1]

In addition to the budget, Governor DeSantis has also pushed for a ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, including critical race theory, at Florida colleges.[2] This announcement was made on January 31, 2023, in Bradenton, Florida.[3] Many Republicans have applauded DeSantis’ decision, citing it as evidence of his commitment to “freedom” and the “bold policy agenda” he has pursued for the Republican Party. Whether or not DeSantis’ plan will be successful will be determined during the upcoming legislative session, which begins on Tuesday, March 7th.
